<p>A double cell active matrix thin film transistor switched liquid crystal display (10) in which the twist directions of the two cells is opposite, has a common central wall of a quartz substrate (11) carrying the thin film transistor array (12) on one surface, flanked on either side by outer cell wall of glass (15,16). The symmetry of the structure cancels stresses induced by the thermal expansion mismatch between the quartz and the glass, enabling use of the cheaper glass material for the outer cell walls, as well as close thermal coupling between the two cells, facilitating the ability of the double cell structure to compensate for thermally induced changes in optical anisotropy.</p> |
