Methods for diagnosing the onset or monitoring of the course of a disease comprising obtaining a T-cell nucleic acid or polypeptide test sample from an animal and detecting in such test sample a first target nucleic acid or polypeptide sequence correlated with the disease. The first target nucleic acid or sequence corresponds to a DNA sequence encoding the variable region of a chain of a T-cell receptor. The first target polypeptide sequence corresponds to a variable region of a chain of a T-cell antigen receptor. Methods for treating an animal afflicted with a disease correlated with a T-cell clone containing a specific variable region. The method comprises treating the animal with at least one antibody which is reactive with the specific variable region of the T-cell clone. Antibodies for detecting or treating a disease correlated with at least one T-cell clone containing a specific variable region wherein said antibody is specific for said variable region.
