PURPOSE:To stabilize image density at the time of image formation by calculating the density gradient based on reflection detecting signals from a first density reference surface and a second density reference surface, which becomes the reference, and deciding the image formation condition by comparing this with the reflection detecting signal from an original. CONSTITUTION:The first density reference surface P1, the second density reference surface P2, and the original 2 are illuminated and scanned by an illuminating and scanning means, and the density gradient which becomes the reference based on the reflection detecting signal from the first density reference surface P1 and the reflection detecting signal from the second density reference surface P2 is calculated. The reflection detecting signal from the original 2 is compared with the calculated density gradient, and the image forming condition is decided so that the image forming density at the time of image formation is stable. Thus, detection of the original 2 density can be carried out accurately without being influenced by variation in characteristics of each element constituting the device, and the density of the formed image can be adjusted to the optimum density. |
