<p>A nuclear fuel assembly 10 from a pressurised water-cooled nuclear reactor comprises a Zircalloy wrapper 12 and a bundle 14 of nuclear fuel pins 16 held by metal grids 18. To dismantle the fuel assembly 10 after irradiation, a major portion 20, 22 of that part of the wrapper 12 that extends beyond each end of the bundle 14 is removed to leave short wrapper stubs 28, 30 of an intermediate wrapper portion 32. A respective end cap 34 is inserted in each stub 28, 30 and secured thereto by welding or by a mechanical deformation technique. <IMAGE></p> |
