For the production of a light easily transported and laid turf roll, the turf roll is brought to germination by liquid nutrient supply without a humus layer solely on a nonwoven fibre mat (1) of degradable natural fibres, a perforated film (2) of degradable plastic material being provided on the rear of the nonwoven fibre mat.
