Apparatus for machining a bevel gear

The apparatus has a frame (1), a spindle head (4) on the frame (1) for rotatably supporting a spindle (3) mounting a machining tool (2) e.g. a grinding wheel, and an indexing unit (7) for holding a workpiece (W) such that the workpiece (W) is indexed by one pitch of teeth to be formed thereon to perform machining of tooth spaces with the tool (2). The spindle (3) is horizontally and rotatably held against movement in the head (4) axial. The head (4) is movable back and forth axially laterally. A column (5) is provided on the apparatus frame (1) in front of the spindle head (4) such that it is turnable about a vertical axial line at an arbitrary angle. A plurality of indexing units (7) may be provided on an external periphery of the column (5) spaced apart. The indexing units (7) are provided on the column (5) in a vertically movable manner. A plurality of vertically movable lifting frames (6), may be provided on the column (5) at a distance therebetween in the circumferential direction of the column (5) and the indexing units may be detachably mounted on them.
