A substantially homogeneous random vinyl acetate copolymer comprising the following general structure: wherein R is hydrogen or methyl; R1 is hydrogen or methyl; R2 is hydrogen, C1-C20 alkyl, C6-C20 aryl or C7-C30 alkylaryl; n is a number from 1-1,000; y is 50-99.999 mole%; and z is 0.001-50 mole%. The vinyl acetate copolymer is hydrolyzed to provide a substantially random homogeneous vinyl alcohol copolymer that can be thermoplastically processed into shaped articles possessing good gas barrier properties. |
