A circuit arrangement for switching an electrical consumer on and off, in particular for cyclic operation of an electric motor, has a controllable switch element the control connection of which is connected to a drive circuit and through which the consumer current flows. The circuit arrangement also has a detector circuit which, in the event of a fault, switches off the consumer if a limit value of the consumer current is exceeded. To detect short-circuit faults, the control connection (collector of T1) or a signal corresponding to the control connection signal and a connection (7) of the switch element (5) leading to the consumer are each connected via a diode (D1, D2) to the input (33) of a driver (27) which, in the event of a fault, actuates a switch element (3) that breaks the consumer current circuit.
