The system has AC motors (m) driving a conveying arrangement that carries the articles (W) whose properties or characteristics require measuring (4). The conveying arrangement is controlled by an inverter (20). A frequency change signal is used to effect control. The property measured may be the weight of the article and the results of weighing may be used to sort or grade (7) the articles. The article may be tested to decide whether or not it is made of metal. The conveying arrangement may include an output conveyor (1), a measuring conveyor (3) and a sorting/ grading conveyor (8). A sensor (6) detects when an article leaves the input conveyor (1) for the measuring conveyor (3). |
