摘要 Use of a bimodal distribution of ''coarse'' and ''fine'' submicrometer, single crystal, silicon carbide whiskers to reinforce ceramic materials provides an increase in cutting performance over an equal amount of either coarse or fine whiskers. The coarse whiskers have a number average diameter within a range of from 0.5 to less than 1.0 micrometer and the fine whiskers have a number average diameter within a range of 0.1 to less than 0.5 micrometer. The bimodal distribution of whiskers constitutes 5 to 40 volume percent of a resultant whisker-reinforced ceramic composite material. The resultant materials are useful as cutting tools.
