PURPOSE:To suppress the increase in excessive loss and the change in branching characteristic and to prevent the deterioration in characteristics by the generation of cracks by integrally heating and welding optical fibers and arraying members and heating and stretching the integrated part to a tapered shape. CONSTITUTION:The optical fibers 1, 2 are inserted in joint surfaces by the arraying members 5, 6 having accepting grooves 3.4 for the optical fibers 1, 2 and are heated and welded. Further, the combined part thereof is heated and stretched to a tapered shape to form a waist part. Namely, the deformation of cores 12 by the surface tension at the time of welding is averted. The outside shape of the coupling part is circular and the symmetricalness of the stress distribution at the time of stretching increases. The arraying members 5, 6 fill the spacing in the parts where the optical fibers 1, 2 and the optical fibers 1, 2 part and, therefore, the cracks are hardly generated from the separated part. The increase in excessive loss and the change in branching characteristics are suppressed in this way and the deterioration in the characteristics by the generation of the cracks is prevented. |
