METHOD FOR CODING REST ERROR PICTURES

The method described is employed for determining movement vectors during the encoding of image sequences, in particular for the transmission. A partial image area, usually rectangular image section = image block, fed to the movement estimator is compared with a partial image area of the preceding image of the same size. In this process, the movement vector which specifies the displacement from the position of the partial image area within the image to the partial image area of the preceding image that exhibits the greatest similarity with the partial image area of the current image is assigned to each partial image area of the current image. The displacement of the current partial image area relative to the partial image area of the preceding image is limited by the definition of a search area. Within the search area, the similarity of the two partial image areas is then measured at various search positions. In order to keep the number of search positions low, a selection of search positions is made in such a way that the movement vector obtained corresponds as exactly as possible with the minimum search of the error criterion over all possible search positions.
