A hydrolyzed membrane capable of selectively permeating water, which contains as a major component a material capable of producing carboxyl groups by hydrolysis, with part of said material having carboxyl groups formed by hydrolysis, and which may be coated with a hydrophilic polymer. The membrane may be widely used as a membrane capable of selectively permeating water, such as a reverse osmosis membrane or a membrane for dehumidifying air as well as a membrane for selective permeation of water according to pervaporation or vapor permeation.
