End wall of explosive shell - has circular expansion groove to reduce stress in end wall

The end wall (1) of the casing of an explosive shell has a narrow circular groove (7) formed on its outer surface. The groove depth (6) extends into a rib (3) projecting from the inner surface of the end wall (1). This groove (7) permits the end wall to expand diametrically and so reduces stresses which would other wise be caused in the end wall when the shell is fired. Several additional circular grooves of smaller diameter may be formed in the end wall. The groove (7) may be interrupted in one or more places by a transverse rib. USE - Explosive shells.
