Motor vehicle control apparatus includes a push button module (36a) to select a desired transmission state, an encoder (72) tracking the position of mode select shaft (30) to provide a transmission state signal, and a logic module (36b) to shift the transmission to the desired state, enable the starter motor (160) on receipt of a ''neutral'' or ''park'' signal from encoder (72), and energize the backup lamp on receipt of a ''reverse'' signal. A light next to each push button indicates the transmission state at all times, all the lights (220) momentarily lighting upon closing the ignition switch as a function check.
