The invention relates to a device for actuating an internal combustion engine valve (12), the valve stem (14) of which is mounted so that it can slide axially along its axis (X-X) in the cylinder head (10) and the end of which is urged axially, counter to the coaxial load which is applied to it by a return spring (26), by a control cam with interposition of a push rod (18) which is mounted so that it can slide in the cylinder head (10) along an axis (Y-Y) parallel to the axis (X-X) of the valve stem (14) and slightly off-centred with respect to the latter. According to the invention, the end face of the valve stem and the corresponding bearing face of the push rod (18) with which it interacts are respectively planar or domed so as to define a contact area of reduced surface-area, the centre of which is located substantially on the axis (X-X) of the valve stem (14). <IMAGE>
