Silencer unit for four-stroke motorcycles, esp. single or four cylinder, upto 1300 cc, max. 150 HP motorcycles, has one or more coated catalysts (1), located in the collector pipe (3) connected to the manifold pipes (2), in the inlet pipe (4) or in the silencer (5) upstream of the silencer pipes (11-16), for noxious substance redn. in the exhaust gas. The catalyst has 15-60 (pref. 25-35) cells/sq. cm., is coated with a 1.6-2.3 (pref. 25-35) cells/sq. cm., is coated with a 1.6-2.3 (pref. 2-2.2) g/cu dm. Pt-Rh coating of Pt:Rh ratio 5:1 and fills the flow cross-section to a length of 40-120 (pref. 65-85) mm. The distance between the catalyst and the cylinder outlet (17) has a min. value of 200 mm for single cylinder motorcycles and 500 (pref. 650) mm for four cylinder motorcycles and a max. value of 1600 (pref. 1300-1500) mm. ADVANTAGE - Reduces CO, HC and NOx emissions by more than 50%, fulfils current noise regulations, can be easily retrofitted to four-stroke motorcycles running on lead-free petrol, produces max. 5% power loss, costs no more than mass produced units not contg. the catalyst, has a long service life (up to 80000 km) and does not affect ground clearance and side sway properties of motorcycles.
