In a method for entering scanning zone co-ordinates in automatic readers for letters, forms or the like (postal items), it is provided that means, electrically connected to the control of the automatic reader, for digitising the co-ordinate values of predetermined points on an area are provided and that corresponding points are predetermined on the said area of the scanning zone of a postal item and the digital signals allocated to these points and to other points are supplied to the control of the automatic reader.
