The needle shaft drive (135) for a sewing machine is to one side of the needle shaft (131), and the thread supply drive (150) is on the opposite side of the needle shaft (131). One drive is from the shaft (126) and the other drive is from a dedicated shaft (151) separated from it, but with a keyed drive link between the two shafts (126, 151). ADVANTAGE - The arrangement gives a greater deg. of design freedom in constructing the needle shaft and thread supply drives.
