Fine grained waste material contg. coke is used by adding the material, opt. after raising the coke content, as adsorbent, to waste water highly loaded with hydrocarbons, dispersing the material in the water, and after a few mins. sepg. it mechanically, concentrating and removing water. USE/ADVANTAGE - Water may contain highly toxic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals. The prod., loaded with hydrocarbons, has a high calorific value, and can be used as a fuel in power station furnaces, or, if the content of harmful matter is high, can be burned in waste disposal furnaces. It can also be used as reducing agent in non-ferrous metallurgy. Coke-contg. waste is disposed of inexpensively and economically. Oil can be removed from emulsions with high emulsifier content, the emulsifier removed at the same time. Heavy metals are also removed.
