The process uses at least two thermodynamically independent heat pumps together with non-azeotropic mixtures as the thermodynamic fluid. In cases where at least one of the external fluids is a gas, use is made of metal cloth exchangers for the supply and/or the recovery of enthalpy. In order to achieve an optimum value for the enthalpy recovered, the following are preferably used: -(A) two thermodynamically independent heat pumps (A, B); -(B) non-azeotropic mixtures as thermodynamic fluids; -(C) metal cloth counterflow exchangers (2, 4, 7, 11) when the external fluid or fluids is or are gaseous. This process is particularly suitable for drying units with recovery of enthalpy from the extracted air, and for the recovery of enthalpy from the fumes from combustion of natural gas which are loaded with steam. In both applications, this process enables excellent performance coefficients to be obtained. <IMAGE>
