Some at least of the compacting plates (8) have protrusions (9) on their faces towards the material in the moulds (4). The oblong blocks can be formed in the moulds with their axes vertical, and the size of the protrusions can be matched to the discrepancy between the actual amount poured into the mould and the desired amount.
