The invention relates to an apparatus for materials with a broad grain size band spectrum. The aim of the invention is to prevent both thermal damage to the products, which are e.g. adhered with starch, and also to prevent heat losses by wall cooling and to achieve a uniform drying. The object of the invention is to develop a radiative layer drier in which the walls of the radiation layer have a lower temperature than the entering hot air, and a targeted residence time of the products corresponding to their size is made possible. According to the invention, the chamber walls are fitted with cooling elements and are constructed as double walls, and are arranged at a defined angle. The cooling elements are connected together by a conduit for heat recovery. The invention is suitable for the food industry and agriculture, preferably for the drying of blanched potato pieces.
