Process for obtaining a derivative of benzylidine acylacetic esters known as 3-isopropyl-5-(2-methoxyethyl)- 2,6-dimethyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine, based on the reaction of a benzylidine acylacetic ester of formula II <IMAGE> with a β-aminocrotonic ester of formula III <IMAGE> where R1 is an isopropyl group and R2 is a 2-methoxyethyl group or R1 is a 2-methoxyethyl group and R2 is an isopropyl group; benzylidine acetic ester II is prepared by reacting acetyl acetate CH3-CO-CH2-CO2-R1 with 3- nitrobenzaldehyde in the presence of catalytic quantities of amine arylsulphonates, isonipecotic acid and amine carboxylates, excepting acetates. The derivative obtained has important vasodilatory properties.
