PURPOSE:To shorten the length of a damper by allowing a spool hole to accommodate an expansion and a compression spool to perform changing-over of the damping force range in the expansion and compression strokes with an intermediate chamber interposed, and therein holding the expansion and compression spools in the neutral position by the use of one spring. CONSTITUTION:An upper A and a lower chamber B are formed partitioned by a piston 2 fitted slidably in a cylinder 1, and are filled with a fluid. A compression side spool 13 and an expansion side spool 14 are slidably installed in a spool hole 3b of a piston rod 3, at which the piston 2 is mounted, and an upper bushing 15 and a lower bushing 16 constitute a compression side pressure receiving chamber C and an expansion side pressure receiving chamber D. An intermediate chamber E is provided between these two spools 13, 14, and a spring 17 is fitted so as to energize them in the vertical direction slidingly. This intermediate chamber E leads to the two pressure receiving chambers C, D via respective orifices 13a, 14a.
