66 Intermediates of formula (III) <IMG> (III) are employed in the manufacture of new phenylethanolaminomethyltetralins of formula (I) <IMG> (I) wherein - E represents hydrogen, (C1-C4) alkyl, (C1-C4) alkoxy, phenyl, nitro, halogen or trifluoromethyl, - L represents hydrogen, (C1-C4) alkyl, (C1-C4) alkoxy, phenyl, nitro, or halogen, or - E and L taken together represent a group -CH=CH-CH=CH- or - CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-, and - G represents hydrogen, chloro, hydroxy or an -OG' group wherein G' represents a (C1-C4) alkyl group either unsubstituted or substituted with hydroxy, (C1-C4) alkoxy, (C1-C4) alkoxycarbonyl, carboxy, or (C3-C7) cycloalkyl; a (C3-C7) cycloalkyl group; or a (C2-C4) alkanoyl group; and salts thereof. Such compounds of formula I are active as intestinal motility modulating agents and intraocular hypertension lowering agents.
