Samples are taken, in a time window surrounding the presence of a predetermined fault, of predetermined context variables, processing is applied to the acquired samples in order to derive from them a reduced form of these samples constituted by a set of ''moments'' associated with each of the context variables (for example the mean value and the variance), this set is stored and the stored set is updated at each of the successive manifestations of the intermittent fault. The sets of moments thus updated can be transmitted to a diagnostic tool (8) allowing the establishment, by correlations, of the origin of the functional fault. Application to a device installed in a motor vehicle for the detection of intermittent functional faults of units forming part of that vehicle.
