The modular system comprises a processor (VE) and a number of addressed function units (FB1,FB2), in turn coupled to respective peripheral devices (PG1,PG2). The plug connections (AS1,AS2) between the latter and the function units (FB1,FB2) each incorporate an address memory (ADS1,ADS2) in which a symbolic address for the function unit (FB1,FB2) is loaded. The plug connection (AS1,AS2) allows access to the function unit (FB1,FB2) only when the correct symbolic address is received. Pref. the symbolic addresses for the funciton units (FB1,FB2) are fed to each memory (ADS1,ADS2) via the processor (VE). ADVANTAGE - Prevents connection of incorrect peripherals.
