<p>A process for electrolytically producing an aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide in an electrolytic cell (10) having an anode compartment (12), a cathode compartment (30), and at least one ion exchange compartment (20) between the anode compartment (12) and the cathode compartment (30), the process comprising feeding an aqueous solution of an alkali metal chlorite to the ion exchange compartment (20), electrolyzing an anolyte (16) in the anode compartment (12) to generate hydrogen ions, passing the hydrogen ions from the anode compartment (12) through a cation exchange membrane (18) into the ion exchange compartment (20) to displace alkali metal ions and produce an aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide, and passing alkali metal ions from the ion exchange compartment (20) into the cathode compartment (30).</p> |
