The die for a continuous casting assembly, particularly for steel, has a non-metallic wall (2) to give the cast shape and act as a heat exchanger. The pref. material for the wall (2) is a ceramic, with built-in channels (4) for a coolant medium. The pref. material for the wall (2) is a silicised silicon carbide, and it can be reinforced by introduced fibres. The coolant medium is carried in closed channels (4) within the wall (2) structure, open on the outer side (9) away from the interior (8) of the moulding zone, separated from each other by lands (3). The outer side (9) of the wall (2) is bonded to a support plate (1) by an adhesive or soldering. The support plate (1) is of metal and is structured with parallel grooves (5) to complement the lands (3) on the wall (2) with a groove (5) depth (t) which is less than the height of the lands (3). The wall (2) is divided into a number of wall segments, each with at least one coolant channel (4). A narrow gap is between neighbouring wall segments, from the moulding zone (8) outwards, according to the coefficient of expansion of the wall material, with a depth matching the wall (2) thickness. ADVANTAGE - The design gives a long-life die, which retains its shape and, at the same time, gives improved quality to the continuously-cast steel material.
