The invention relates to a process for producing aqueous ammonium nitrite solutions which are virtually free from Na<+> and NO3<-> ions, using ion-exchange chromatography, characterized in that (a) an aqueous, 1-50 wt.% sodium nitrite solution is passed over a strongly basic anion exchanger, (b) the anion exchanger is rinsed with desalinated water to remove the sodium ions, (c) the nitrite ions are eluted by passing a 1-25 wt.% NH4OH solution over the anion exchanger. The invention also relates to the use of these solutions as volatile corrosion inhibitors.
