New 3-hydroxy and 3-keto- butanoyl-l-glutamine derivs. - used in solns. for parenteral or enteral nutrition of catabolic patients

L-glutamine derivs. of formula (I) and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts are new, where R = MeCH-OH or MeCO. (I) can be prepd. by acylation of L-glutamine on the amino gp. using 3-hydroxybutanoic acid or 3-ketobutanoic acid. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) can be used in parenteral or enteral nutrition of catabolic patient in prepns. contg. amino acids and/or opt. conventional additives. (I) provide ketone structures and glutamine which can be used as energy substrates, without any of the problems usually associated with ketone structures and with glutamine ie., (I) are stable, even to heat sterilisation, easily soluble and can be metabolised by the organism. The problems of metabolic acidosis, increased blood pH and/or alkalosis are avoided. The total amt. of (I) in the nutrient prepns. is pref. 1-50 g/l, in the form of a 5-20 w.t % aq. soln.
