<p>A customized packaging arrangement, for securely containing rectanguloid articles (A) that vary in size and aspect ratio, comprises a combination of inner (PI) and outer (PO) packages. The inner package (PI) consists of first (10) and second (30) rectangular paperboard sheets that are joined in superposed, transverse relation at their central portions (20 and 40) to provide a rectangular double-walled bottom (20 + 40) for supporting an article (A) thereon, the two sheets (10 and 30) extending perpendicularly therefrom to provide opposite side (22 + 26) and end (42 + 46) portions, which are first folded against the article sides (S) and ends (E), respectively, and are then folded and joined in overlapping relation (G) upon the article top (T). The inner package (PI) so formed is then centered on, and secured to, a third paperboard sheet (50), which includes a rectangular central portion (52) that is larger than the inner-package bottom (20 + 40) centered thereon and, extending perpendicularly therefrom, opposite side (62 + 66) and end (70 + 74) portions which are first folded upwardly into spaced, confronting relation with the inner-package sides (22) and ends (42), respectively, and are then folded inwardly and joined (AT) in overlapping relation upon the inner-package top (26 + 46). The outer package (PO) so formed is spaced from the inner package (PI) around its sides (22) and ends (42) to provide cushioning against impact. All cutting and scoring of the three sheets (10 + 30 and 50) thus forming the inner (PI) and outer (PO) packages may be automated on-line in accordance with given dimensions of the article (A) to be packaged.</p> |
