The walking stick for use by a lame or infirm person has a shaft (3) with a handle (15). The shaft consists of a middle part (7) of I shaped cross-section which is joined to the handle by a tubular portion (34) and is joined to a rubber boss (2) by a second tubular portion (1). The I section supports two hinged arms (10, 11) which can be swung outwards by a torsion spring. These arms are normally held against the web of the I section by a sliding tube (25) which is pressed downwards by an internal compression spring but is held upwards by a spring catch (14). In the event of the stick falling to the ground the catch is released by one or other of the levers (32) or (33) striking the ground. The tube (25) is then pushed towards the boss by the internal spring and the upper arm swings upwards. The user of the walking stick can then pick it up without having to bend down.
