Novel 2-carboxymethylsulphonyl -propane-1,3-disulphonates of formula (I) are claimed as is also their 2-stage prepn. by (i) reacting 1 mol. of an allyl sulphonate of formula (II) with 1 mol. of an alpha halo-carboxylic acid (e.g. alpha-chloroacetic acid) of formula (III) and 2 mols of a metal hydrogen sulphite (e.g. NaHSO3) in presence of a peroxodisulphate catalyst; and (ii) adding an iodide catalyst to the reaction soln. and boiling until the sulphinate content has reduced to zero. M = a cation, esp. Na; and R = H or 1-14C alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are synthetic intermediates or can be used as hydrotropes in microemulsions. (I) can be prepd. directly from allyl sulphonates without the need to isolate the intermediate prod.
