A magnetic recording tape (2) is moved by contact between a rigid drive spindle (3) coupled to a motor and a friction pressure roller (11). The roller has a metal bush (12) supported on bearings (10) with an outer coating of an elastomer (13). The roller is mounted at the end of a spindle (9) mounted on a plate (7) pivotable about an axis (17) under the control of a spring (16).
