New 2-methylsulphonyl -3-sulphopropyl-ammonium betaines (methylsulphone sulphobetaines) are of the formula R1R2R2N+-CH2-CH(SO3CH3)-CH2-SO3(-) where R1 and R2 = H or 1-3 C alkyl; R3 = H, 1-22 C alkyl or an alkyl gp. attached by a -CH2-CONH- gp. (I) are prepd. by a 2-stage reaction, involving (1) reacting allylammonium salts of the formula R1R2R3N+-CH2-CH=CH2 (II) with equimolar amts. of ClCH2COOH and twice molar amts. of a metal H sulphite, pref. NaHSO3, in the presence of a catalytic amt. of a peroxidisulphate (III); and (2) adding a catalytic amt. of iodide and boiling the soln. until the sulphinate content has been reduced to zero. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as organic intermediates. Prods. in which R3 = a long-chain alkyl gp. can be used as polyfunctional surfactants and those with short chains as hydrotropic cpds. (I) can be prepd. easily in high purity and high yield from readily available starting materials, without by-prod. formation.
