PURPOSE:To increase the threshold value of an optical damage and to allow the efficient execution of light deflection by a surface acoustic wave, etc., by providing a single crystal substrate consisting of LiNb1-yTayO3 and a modified layer Li1-xHxNb1-yTayO3 in which a part of lithium ion Li<+> is formed by an ion exchange with proton H<+> as the optical waveguide. CONSTITUTION:The properties of the optical waveguide depend largely on the substitution rate x of Li<+> and H<+>. The threshold value of the optical damage increase with an increase in the substitution rate (x) as shown by curves 1, 2. The optical damage is extremely higher at all (x) with the optical waveguide subjected to the proton exchange as shown by the curve 1 than the optical waveguide subjected to the proton exchange after the thermal diffusion of Ti of the curve 2. The electrooptical constant depends mush more nonlinearly on the (x) than the threshold value of the optical damage as shown by the curve 3. The threshold value of the waveguide is increased and the electrooptical constant characteristic is enhanced in this way if the substitution rate (x) is so determined as to attain a 0.4<=x<=0.55 range.
