In this process, the gas to be cooled is quenched with a cooling fluid in the form of gas or vapour in such a way that the cooling fluid is introduced wholly or partially via tubes (5; 6), which are arranged flush in and/or on radial internals (3) in the crude gas duct (1), while the remaining part of the cooling fluid is fed from the shell (2) of the crude gas duct (1). The apparatus relates to a corresponding design of the crude gas duct (1).
