A process for the preparation of 2-chloro-5-amino-methyl-pyridine of the formula <IMAGE> (I) comprising reacting 2-chloro-5-chloromethyl-pyridine of the formula <IMAGE> (II) with excess ammonia, optionally in the presence of a diluent, at a temperature between about -50 DEG C. and +50 DEG C.
