The invention relates to the preparation of bovine growth hormone by culturing a microorganism in order to express the DNA in it, which codes for a mature bovine growth hormone but in which the code sequence inside the approximately 25 N-terminal amino acids is provided by a synthetic DNA whose nucleotide sequence has been altered from the natural one for bovine growth hormone but without altering the natural amino acid sequence, in such a way that the resulting mRNA has a conformation structure which - when compared with the use of the natural nucleotide sequence for bovine growth hormone - disturbs the expression of the hormone to a smaller extent in the said microorganism. <IMAGE>
