PURPOSE:To facilitate and stabilize the production of cadmium oxide powder for paste type negative electrode active material having the excellent coating ability under the kneaded active material condition and a high active degree by limitting a discharge speed range of the cadmium steam from a nozzle. CONSTITUTION:Discharge speed of the cadmium steam to be discharged from a tip nozzle 4 of a cadmium oxide powder manufacture device 1 to an oxide chamber 5 is set at 6.5-12.2m/sec. Cadmium oxide powder for the paste type negative electrode active material, of which specific surface area is 1.7-1.9m<2>/g and a mean particle diameter is 0.60-0.70mum and having the excellent coating ability to an electrode plate under the kneaded active material condition and a high active degree, can be produced easily and stably.
