This device, comprising a brake pedal, a reservoir of hydraulic liquid, a master cylinder, wheel cylinders or callipers, is characterised in that, in each hydraulic pipe lying between the master cylinder and a wheel calliper is located a hydraulic pump actuated by an electric motor with two directions of rotation, means being provided for actuating the pump in a given direction of rotation in the event of braking, such that it supplies, if the corresponding wheel is adhering, a pressure which is added to that provided by the master cylinder, the resultant pressure activating the brake calliper in a boosting mode, and means being provided for actuating each pump in the other direction of rotation if there is a loss in adherence of the associated wheel, such that it supplies a pressure which subtracts from that provided by the master cylinder, the resultant pressure deactivating the brake calliper in an anti-lock mode. <IMAGE>
