A process for the preparation and isolation of p-hydroxybenzonitrile (HBN), obtained by reaction of a p-halogenated phenol with cuprous cyanide in a suitable solvent, characterised in that the reaction mixture obtained when the reaction of a p-halogenated phenol with cuprous cyanide is substantially complete is brought into contact with an aqueous solution of a bromide salt and optionally an organic diluent, the aqueous and organic phases are separated, the HBN is separated by distillation from the organic phase, an alkali metal cyanide is added to the aqueous phase and the CuCN is separated by filtration of the resulting aqueous phase.
