This invention relates to an electronic display device. The device includes an active display means, such as a liquid crystal cell, a certain number of elementary patterns (m1 to n) defined on or in the abovementioned active display means, an electronic control circuit making it possible to control the elementary patterns selectively, and electrical connection means linking each of the patterns to the control circuit, this device being characterised in that some of the elementary patterns are joined together closely to form a set of characteristic groups (G1 to n), each group being separated from the group or groups which are adjacent to it by a separation band (b1 to n) having, at least in part, a width (X) which is greater than the spacing distance (Y) which is left between the patterns within a single group. This electronic display device applies to panels for displaying alphanumeric characters, for viewing messages in public centres such as station or airport concourses. <IMAGE>
