<p>A substantially saturated cross-linked elastomer comprising a substantially amorphous linear high molecular weight polymer or copolymer of an alpha-olefin of the formula CH2=CHR where R is a 1-4 C alkyl group, and units of one or more polymerizable aromatic hydrocarbons which contain at least one ethylenic double bond in the molecule or of an aliphatic diene, is made by curing the polymer or copolymer in the presence of the aromatic hydrocarbon or diene, and an activator acting with a free-radical mechanism. The curing is preferably effected at a temperature between 100 DEG and 250 DEG C. The aromatic hydrocarbon may be styrene, divinyl benzene, or a mixture containing 60,5% divinylbenzene, 15,4% ethylvinylbenzene, and 24,1% saturated aryalkyl hydrocarbons. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, and dimethylbutadiene. The high molecular weight polymer may be polypropylene, polybutene, or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, or butene. The activator may be dibenzoyl peroxide, dicumyl peroxide, tert. butyl peroxide, chlorobenzoyl peroxide, or tert. butyl perbenzoate. The mix to be cured may contain a filler such as a metal oxide, silicate, silica, or carbon black. Specification 885,969 is referred to.</p> |
