A distance sensor, esp. a potentiometer, has a carrier (6) for a physical parameter memory device, esp. a resistance path, and a carriage (8) movable w.r.t. the carrier with a device which selects a defined memory device position. The carrier and carriage have interacting carrier drive elements (10-13) near one end. The carrier is moved in the direction of carriage movement after a restraining force produced by slide springs (16-18) has been overcome. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables automatic position adjustment between memeory device, e.g. resistive track in case of a potentiometer, and carriage. Converting linear movement into electrical or optical signals. Angle coder pref. generating electrical signals, e.g. to indicate throttle flap angle of i.c. engine.
