A method of controlling the illumination of the image sensor (15) of a light section sensor (11,12,14,15) involves using an auxiliary photosensitive sensor (18) working in conjunction with associated optics (16,17) to detect in separate regions the intensity image of the light section formed on a measurement surface (13). The intensity distribution along a section line is determined. The information of the image sensor derived during illumination of the image sensor and processed by an evaluation device (19).
