Carbonyls are removed from gases contg. H2 and CO by (a) subjecting part of the gas to an exothermal conversion, (b) mixing the converted portion of the gas, with raised temp., with the unconverted residue, and (c) leading the mixt. through an inert charge. ADVANTAGE - All gases contg. H2 and CO, which are to be incompletely converted, e.g, methanol or NH3 synthesis, CO prodn., or as heating gas for driving gas turbines, can be treated. The carbonyls decompose to metals, which are deposited on the inert material.
