A device for drying leather and the like comprises a support plate (1) for the leather (23) and a lid (2) which is placed in an essentially airtight manner on the support plate while covering the leather and which is provided with an elastic intermediate bottom (19) that presses the leather against the support plate. The intermediate bottom (19) is surrounded in an airtight manner by the rim of the lid (2) and at least a first air passage (4) opens into the enclosed space between the intermediate bottom (19) and the support plate. The intermediate bottom is formed by an air-conducting plate (5) made of a material which is permeable to air in both its longitudinal direction and in the direction perpendicular thereto. On the side of said plate facing the leather is a separating layer (6) made of a material impermeable to air with individual aeration holes (9) distributed over the air-conducting plate in such a way as to lie essentially in the region of the leather placed on the support plate. The lid is provided, on the side above the separating layer, with at least a second air passage (7), a vacuum aggregate (24) being connected to either the first or the second air passage.
